What is Botox(R) Cosmetics?
Botox(R) (onabotulinumtoxinA), Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA), and Xeomin(R) (incobotulinumtoxinA) are different types of neurotoxins that can only be prescribed to you by a healthcare professional. Botox(R) Cosmetics is how (onabotulinumtoxinA) is marketed. They can be used as a temporary treatment for patients between the ages of 18 and 65. These treatments tend to be quick and comfortable and can create results within hours of administration.
How do Neurotoxins work?
Neurotoxins are special proteins that block nerve impulses to muscles thus restricting muscle contractions. In doing so, they help to relax the muscles beneath the skin, so that fine lines and wrinkles become less visible, giving the skin a healthy, more youthful appearance. Blocking the nerve impulses to hyperactive or overly powerful muscles can control the pain experienced in TMJ or migraines, as well as control the destruction of teeth and dental restorations due to severely high bite forces.
Depending on each individual case, the results can last between one and six months. Treatment is temporary, and once the Neurotoxin begins to wear off, the skin may eventually return to the way it looked before treatment, or the muscle may eventually return to its original level of hypercontractility.
Botox is also used to relieve symptoms of TMJ. Botox can sometimes be used to reduce the amount of stress placed on the teeth and jaw so that patients feel comfortable and confident.
